How my Mum has lost 2 stones of body weight. Earlier in the year at University I had a module to complete on Fitness Instruction, one of our assignments was to complete a 6 week training program. I decided to ask my sister to complete the program with me as my Mum had been resistant to exercise in past whenever I suggested it as a good idea. After around 3 weeks of training my Mum had asked to come along, which I was more than happy with, Since this time my Mum has been to the gym at least 3 times a week consistently. Some background history on my Mum, she is now into her 60’s and does not have a sporting background, she had completed dance classes and some yoga in the past. She has also had 7 children. We did a foundation phase where we focused on cardiorespiratory capacity and conditioning, strength and flexibility. When thinking up a training regime for clients I don't wish to waste mine or their time. Personally I take no satisfaction in taking peoples money and in return getting no results. So after lots of trial and error I have found the formula that works best. I give clients skill activities as a part of every session, I try to include the olympic lifts or variations as a part of a program and mixed martial arts as it is a multi layered sport. There is a great sense of achievement when certain goals are achieved and new skills aquired and a real break in the monotmy of an uninspired cardio and weight machine session. The great thing about olympic lifting is it combines speed and strength and has excellent body composition results, in essence just making your body work better. With martial arts you can gain excellent conditioning and vital skills like being able to defend yourself. Things to consider before embarking on a training program. Try to consider these aspects of fitness : Strength: the extent to which muscles can exert force by contracting against resistance (e.g. holding or restraining an object or person) Flexibility: the ability to achieve an extended range of motion without being impeded by excess tissue, i.e. fat or muscle (e.g. executing a leg split) Cardiovascular Endurance: the heart's ability to deliver blood to working muscles and their ability to use it (e.g. running long distances) Coordination: the ability to integrate the above listed components so that effective movements are achieved. The word strength should not be an intimidating word to anyone!
